UCD Lau Gar Kickboxing Club is one of the most popular martial arts clubs in University College Dublin. As a student-run Club, we strive to provide our members with the highest quality training experience in a safe and inclusive environment which is open to all. Our coaches – Stephen Spain and Stephen Kealy – are highly qualified and have over 30 years of combined coaching experience. Training sessions focus on fitness, kickboxing technique, sparring and self-defence: no prior martial arts experience is required. For members interested in competitive kickboxing, the Club has enjoyed previous success in inter-varsity, regional and national competitions – we can provide additional training and supports to anyone who wants to compete. Member can also learn the official Lau Gar syllabus and earn belts through grading. Please note only current UCD students, UCD faculty, UCD staff and UCD alumni are eligible to become Club members.
We train on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Hall A, UCD Sports Center, from 18.00-20.00 during Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 (12-weeks per trimester). Weekend training is also available on request for members who are in preparation for competitions or grading. For training, please bring a sports towel, comfortable sports clothing and a mouth guard if you wish to spar. The Club is happy to provide members with all other equipment – but feel free to bring your own gear if you have it.
